FUN IN THE SUN POOL CAKE!

Here's the finished cake, complete with flip flop candles!

The fun really is in the details.  Here are some close ups of the figures in the pool.

Here are the people

Now the fun really  begins...  We had such a great time creating the figures that were having fun in the pool.  The figures and accessories are all made from fondant.  It was so much fun making the pool come to life.
We love to add small details to give each cake that extra special touch.  Here, the birthday girl's name is on the towel laying beside the pool.

Filling the Pool!

Now we are adding the water.  Everyone always wants to know "how did you do the water?".  Making "water" to go on top of a cake is really quite simple.  We took piping gel (available at most craft stores in the cake decorating section) and put just a drop of blue food coloring.  The color is beautiful and it stays wet, or wet looking, for a very long time.  It has a gel like consistence (hence, the name!) so it doesn't run like water.

Outline of Swimming Pool

This was the beginning of the pool for my daughter's "fun in the sun" pool cake.  This cake was simple in its design, so the execution was especially important.  Here we have an 11 x 15" cake covered with white fondant.  We cut fondant out of various shades of blue, green and grey to create the border and outline for the pool.

YODA!

This cake was actually created for our web designer's son.  Happy Birthday, Finn!  The "wood" and "stick" are made out of gum paste (kind of like edible playdough that dries really hard).  His head is made from rice krispie treats and the body and boulder (in the background) are chocolate cake covered with fondant.  This was so much fun to make and the kids (and parents!) got a big kick out of it.
